Why “Grandma’s Recipe Box?”
I have very fond memories of my Grandmothers, as I’m sure many people do. But there is one thing that so few children have that I did, the fact that my Grandmothers were great friends. I still remember my cousins from one side calling my Grandmother from the other side “Grandma”. There was never an occasion or event that both weren’t at. They even both went to the same church that we did. My children also have very fond memories with my Grandmothers. For that I am especially thankful; these are memories we get to share!
Accordingly, I was fortunate enough to get my Grandma Arlene’s recipe boxes when she moved into assisted living. I was so excited, I wanted to go through and find the recipes my siblings and I remembered so well and make them each a cookbook. Well, it had been close to 4 years and I have only made one, yep ‘one’ recipe out of that box. So now here’s my chance to make these recipes and share them with you. I love looking through them…she always wrote who she got the recipe from and many of them have dates on them. But one of the greatest things I’ve noticed is that she received many recipes from my other Grandma, Madeline.
My Grandma Madeline was also a great cook! Oh the things she made… I still remember calling her and asking her how she made her baked apples. Her response still cracks me up to this day! …Well you take about a pinch of this and maybe ½- ¾ cup of that, and so on. My Grandmother has now passed away but I’m going to have to locate her recipe box in order to capture that piece of my childhood.
So I hope to make a recipe of my Grandmothers periodically and share them with you. I will also be sharing recipes of my husband’s Grandmother; she’s a great cook too! However, some of the recipes will have to be modified to use butter instead of oleo. 🙂
I hope you come along to enjoy my memories.
